The Irish Origins of Halloween

Did you know Halloween’s roots are deeply Irish? The holiday goes back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “SOW-in”). Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, a time when people believed the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest. Communities lit bonfires, wore costumes to keep spirits at bay, and gathered for feasts and storytelling.

Many of today’s Halloween traditions, like carving pumpkins (which originally were turnips), dressing up, and sharing ghost stories, began with these Irish customs. When Irish immigrants brought their traditions to America, the pumpkin took the place of the turnip, and Halloween slowly evolved into the celebration we know today.
